As Muslims in the West who live in the 21st century, our challenges are unique from those before us, and therefore so too should our solutions. Trying to balance the delicate line between remaining faithful to our tradition even as we conform to the cultures and norms of our times in areas that are permissible is the main area of conflict and discourse amongst practicing Muslims.
In many mosques around America, women have below average prayer facilities, and indeed in some mosques women are not even welcome. The differences in opinion on (trivial?) issues such as halal meat and moon sighting divides our communities every year, and the unity of the Muslim Ummah seems like a far away dream. As well, some youth do not feel welcome in our mosques, even as the burning desire to help our brothers and sisters in Syria and Palestine rages in the hearts of many.
These scenarios and more are the reality of our world today. The time to be politically correct is long gone, and turning a blind eye to these issues will only result in the challenges becoming more difficult to solve in the future.
Join Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in the hot seat as Br. Saqib Shafi fires him with some controversial questions in this exclusive talk show entitled ‘Being Muslim Today’.
