There is no doubt that there was tensions between the sahaba, particularly between Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (R) and Ali ibn Abi Talib (R).
They had disagreements regarding the bay’ah (oath of allegiance) to Abu Bakr (R) and the issue of Fadak (inheritance of the Prophet). However it is our belief that they resolved their issues and were able to cooperate and enjoin in a good companionship such that they had many intermarriages amongst their families.
Because of these minor tensions, there was disunity within the ummah which ultimately formulated the beginnings of Shiism. Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi enlightens us the difference between Kufan Shiism and Madani Shiism as well as the birth of Zaidi Shiism.
