While Marco Polo described the Maldives as the ‘Flower of the Indies’, Ibn Batuta called it ‘One of the wonders of the world’. Arab and Persian traders stopped at the Maldives, attracted to the Maldives by the abundance of pearls, spices, coconuts, dried fish and, in particular, cowry shells (which were accepted currency from Africa to China until the sixteenth Century).
