In the early 18th century, Fulani and Mande-speaking tribesmen from the Fouta Djallon region of present-day Guinea converted many Temne of northern Sierra Leone to Islam. During the period of British rule, attempts to spread Christianity were mostly ineffective. Islam continued to spread after independence in 1961. In 1960, the Muslim population was 35 percent and grew to 60 percent by 2000, today almost 80 percent of the country’s population are Muslims, who are primarily Sunnis of the Maliki school. The two Freetown mosques, the Ghadaf Central Mosque and the Freetown Central Mosque, are the biggest mosques in the country. At the beginning of the 18th century, Islam was spread among the Temne people of Sierra Leone by tribesmen from Guinea. Although Britain colonized the country at a later period, Christianity was not accepted by the masses in the country. After the British left and the country gained independence, Islam continued to spread in Sierra Leone and soon nearly the entire population became affiliated to the religion.
