Islam has been present in the Horn of Africa since the early days of the religion, and Djibouti has a long history of Islamic influence. The city’s name itself is derived from the Somali word “Jabuuti,” which means “the place of prayer.” The arrival of Arab traders in the region in the 8th century brought with them the teachings of Islam, which quickly took root among the local population. Over the centuries, Djibouti has been ruled by various Muslim sultanates and empires, including the Adal Sultanate, which played a significant role in the spread of Islam throughout the region.98 percent in Djibouti are Sunni Muslim. The remaining mostly follow Christian traditions. In Djibouti, every town has a masjid. The most famous is the tomb of Sheikh Abu Yazid, found in the Goda Mountains.
