Allah reminds us through this teaching that our judgments must remain confined to what is visible never extending to the hidden realms of the heart or the eternal state of a person’s soul. We can critique a speech an action or a behavior but we cannot label a person based on our assumptions about their intentions or inner state. This principle deeply rooted in our deen has been overshadowed by a culture of casual judgment where we confidently dissect others’ motives and agendas claiming insight into their hearts. Yet Islam teaches us restraint and humility. Even in cases of clear wrongdoing—like the punishment of a thief—the action is addressed but the person is not eternally branded. Their belief and potential for redemption remain intact. This balance between justice and mercy between addressing actions and preserving dignity is what Allah truly wants from us. We are to judge only what is apparent leaving the unseen to the One who knows all.
