Attributes of God in Hinduism according to Rig Veda – Dr Zakir Naik
RRP-5
And amongst the Vedas the most sacred is RigVed.
It’s mentioned in Rigved, Volume 1, Hymn 164, Mantra 46
“Ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti”
“Truth is one, God is one, sages and saintly people call Him by a variety of names”
According to Rigved, Almighty God in one, but the learned people call Him by a variety of names and there are no less than 33 different attributes given to Almighty God in Rigved, Book 2, Hymn 1 alone, no less than 33, one amongst these attributes mentioned in Rigved, Book 2, Hymn 1, V. 3 is ‘Brahma’. ‘Brahma’ is called as ‘The Creator God’. If I translate ‘Creator’ into Arabic, it means ‘Khaliq’. We Muslims have got no objection if someone says Almighty God is Khaliq or Creator or Brahma, but if someone says Brahma is Almighty God who has got four heads and on each head is a crown, he has got four hands, we Muslims take strong objection to it. Moreover, you are going against Shwetashvatara Upanishad Ch. 4, V. 19
“Na tasya pratima asti”
“Of that God there is no Image”
The other attribute given to Almighty God in Rigved, Book 2, Hymn 1, V. 3 is ‘Vishnu’. Vishnu is called as the Sustainer God. If you translate Sustainer into Arabic, it is somewhat similar to Rabb. We Muslims have got no objection if someone says Almighty God is Rabb or Sustainer or Vishnu, but if someone says Vishnu is Almighty God, who has got four hands, one of His right hands is a disk is the Chakra, the other left hand He has a conch, he is travelling on a bird by the name of Garuda or floating on water, on a bed of snakes. We Muslims take strong objection to it. Moreover, you are going against Yajurved Ch. 32, V. 3
“Na tasya pratima asti”
“Of that God there is no ‘pratima’.” Of that God there is no image”
It’s further mentioned in Rigved Book 8, Hymn 1, V. 1
“Ma Chidanyadvi Shansata”
‘Do not worship anyone, but one true God, praise Him alone’
It’s mentioned in Rigved Book 6, Hymn 45, Mantra 16
“Ya Eka Ittamushtuhi”
“Praise only one true God, He alone should be praised”
And the Brahmasutra, the fundamental creed of Hinduism is
‘Ekam Brahm, dvitiya naste nen na naste kinchan”
“Bhagwan ek hi hai dusara nahi hai, nahi hain, nahi hai, zara bhi nahin hai”.
“There is only one God, not a second one, not at all, not at all, not in the least bit.”
If you read the Hindu scriptures, you shall understand the concept of God in Hinduism and understand Hinduism in the right perspective.
