In this video, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi goes over the unique characteristics of Allah’s names and the principles of understanding these divine names.
One of the most common names of Allah is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, both coming from the root Rahima. Also from this root come the names Arhamur Rahimeen (the most merciful of those who show mercy), KhayrAr-Rahimeen (the best of those who show mercy), Dhur-Rahma (the one who has and is characterized by mercy).
Some Unique Characteristics of Allah’s Names:
• What is the concept of the 99 names of Allah?
• Allah (swt) has an infinite number of names, and 99 are the best of the best.
• Hadith: To Allah belong 99 names, whoever fully comprehends (understand, envoke & act) them shall enter Jannah
• Note, the Prophet (pbuh) has not explicitly defined the 99 names, so scholars have derived these names (what we find in charts)
• Names of Allah are always derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah
• We may understand the concept, but not the exact reality (ie, how does Allah rise, His hands, etc..)
• Allah’s names are eternal (where human are given names)
• No other creature can be named with proper noun with alif-lam (Ar Raheem, Al-Malik, Al-Quddus), a person can be Rauf and Raheem, but not Ar-Raheem or Ar-Rauf.
• Allah’s names must be truthful and have valid meanings, human names don’t need to be. (ie, Jameelah – beautiful, Yasir – Wealthy, Saalih – Righteous)
• Allah’s names mostly appear in pairs (combination of 2 names), ie: Ar-Rahman Ar-raheem, Al-hayy Al-Qayium, etc and the combined name has a 3rd meaning
